AFP to procure more missile systems, warships to establish 'reliable deterrent force'

Philippines is eyeing to build a more reliable deterrent force by procuring more missile systems, fighter jets, and warships.

The Philippines is set to procure more missile systems, fighter jets, and warships amid its plan to build a more "reliable deterrent force," according to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

In a statement released on Saturday, the AFP said that it is significantly ramping up its modernization efforts as it moves toward completing its air and missile defense integration.

“We are looking at acquiring more missile systems to complete the integration of our air and missile defense. Alongside this, we will be purchasing more warships and multi-role fighter jets to build a strong and reliable deterrent force,” said AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo S. Brawner Jr.

Brawner disclosed the AFP's plan during the recently held Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi, India. During the event, he also underscored the importance of strategic partnerships, particularly with India, noting the successful defense collaboration exemplified by the BrahMos missile system.

“India is a vital partner. Beyond procurement, we are looking into joint manufacturing, technology transfer, and local production in the Philippines to support our growing defense industry,” he said.

Brawner’s attendance at the Raisina Dialogue marks the first time the AFP has participated in the annual conference. The AFP said it reflects the Philippines’ commitment to deepening international cooperation and addressing shared security concerns.

Previously, the Philippines also disclosed plans to seek a long-term loan from Washington to acquire 20 "brand-new" F-16 fighter jets and other defense equipment from the US government.

Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel Romualdez told GMA News Online that the Philippines intends to purchase brand-new F-16s to be delivered "in tranches," like the 10 Black Hawk helicopters acquired by Manila in 2024.

The multi-role helicopters, utilized for search and rescue and humanitarian aid, are part of a contract for 32 Sikorsky Black Hawk helicopters manufactured by Lockheed Martin under the Philippines' defense modernization program.

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin has said the Philippines' plan to purchase fighter jets from the United States is not for a specific target or state.

The AFP, meanwhile, said that the modernization efforts will allow the Philippines  to confront emerging threats and safeguard the nation's maritime and aerial domains through strategic capability-building. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
