Gabriela asks SC to probe Pasig bet Ian Sia over single mom joke

The Gabriela National Alliance of Filipino Women on Monday filed a letter asking the Supreme Court (SC) to look into the joke made by lawyer and congressional candidate Christian “Ian” Sia about sleeping with single mothers.

In an interview, Gabriela secretary general Clarice Palce said this is to notify the court that a lawyer made “lewd” and “misogynist” remarks  during a campaign rally.

“Nandito tayo para i-urge ang SC na gumawa ng action o sanction kaugnay nito dahil naniniwala tayo na maraming nilabag, maraming violations, si Atty. Christian Sia na isang kandidato sa Pasig para sa pagka-congressman,” she said.

(We’re here to urge the SC to take action or impose sanctions regarding this matter because we believe that Atty. Christian Sia, a candidate for congressman in Pasig, committed numerous violations.)

Last week, Sia went viral on social media for saying that single mothers who still have their period and who are lonely may sleep with him once per year.

Sia has said in a press conference that he was only joking, vowing that it will not happen again.

According to Palce, Gabriela believes that this is not an isolated case noting that Misamis Oriental Governor Peter Unabia also made a joke against women in his campaign rally.

Gabriela said Unabia remarked that only “beautiful women” should become nurses as “ugly nurses” worsen a patient’s condition.

Palce said it was time for misogynistic remarks to be grounds for disqualification.

“Kaya tingin namin, kailangan gumawa ng hakbang, hindi lang ang SC, kahit ang Comelec, napapanahon na bilang maging grounds for disqualification ng mga traditional politicians ang misogynist at sexist remarks na direktang tumatapak sa karapatan at dignidad ng mga kababaihan,” she said.

(That’s why we believe action must be taken, not just by the SC, but also by the Comelec. It’s about time that misogyny and sexism, which directly trample on the rights and dignity of women, be grounds for disqualification of traditional politicians.)

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) earlier issued a show cause order against Sia.—AOL, GMA Integrated News
