SC orders Senate, House to comment on anti-political dynasty petition
The Supreme Court (SC) required Tuesday the Senate and the House of Representatives to comment on a petition seeking to direct Congress to enact a law against political dynasties.
The high tribunal required the two Houses of Congress to comment on the petition within a non-extendible period of 10 days from notice.
This came after several groups and individuals filed a petition asking the SC to compel Congress to comply with Article II Section 26 of the 1987 Constitution by enacting a law prohibiting political dynasties and giving it a definition.
Article II Section 26 of the Constitution provides that "the state shall guarantee equal access to opportunities for public service and prohibit political dynasties as may be defined by law."
The petitioners are the 1Sambayan, Sanlakas, members of Advocates for National Interest, and several individuals.
Meanwhile, the SC said it consolidated the said plea with earlier petitions filed by the Kapatiran Party and Wilfredo Trinidad with other lawyers. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
