TikTok: 4.85M videos taken down in PH for 'violations'

TikTok said nearly 5 million videos from the Philippines have been taken down in the last quarter of 2024 for violating its community guidelines.

TikTok said that nearly 5 million videos from the Philippines have been taken down in the last quarter of 2024 for violating its community guidelines.

In an information sent to GMA News Online regarding its fourth quarter 2024 Community Guidelines Report, TikTok explained that the majority of the 4.85 million videos on its platform were removed for violating its policies on “sensitive” and “mature themes” as well as regulated goods and commercial activities.

The social media giant added that 99.6% of the videos removed from October to December last year were taken down "proactively."

The short-form mobile videos platform, moreover, said it does allow misinformation that may cause significant harm to individuals or society, regardless of intent.

Without disclosing how many videos were removed for spreading misinformation, TikTok said 98% of such type of content was removed proactively.

It said it relies on independent fact-checking partners and its database of previously fact-checked claims to help assess the accuracy of content.

The social media platform added it uses a combination of technology, human moderation, and community reports to remove contents that violate its community guidelines.

TikTok noted that it also removes accounts for repeated violations of our policies.

In addition to taking action on the content itself, the short-form mobile videos sharing platform said it continuously works to deter misinformation proactively by empowering its social media community with media literacy resources that help users recognize misinformation, assess content critically, and file reports about violative content.

Meanwhile, TikTok has launched the #ThinkTwice digital literacy campaign last February to educate users on its community guidelines and to encourage users to think critically before posting and sharing. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
