OCD: Emergency response activated amid dangerous heat index

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said Friday it has activated its emergency response protocols as some areas in the country face a potentially dangerous level of heat index that pose health risks.

With the activation of the emergency response protocols, the OCD said all regional offices are on alert and working closely with local authorities to provide immediate assistance and ensure public safety.

“We urge everyone to exercise extra caution during this period of extreme heat. Stay indoors when possible, hydrate regularly, and be vigilant for symptoms of heat-related illnesses,” OCD administrator Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno said in a statement.

“Our regional offices are on high alert and ready to respond to any emergencies. Safety is a collective effort, and we must all do our part to keep our communities safe,” he added.

At least 16 areas nationwide are expected to experience a dangerous level of heat index of up to 43 degrees Celsius on Good Friday, state weather bureau PAGASA said.

PAGASA warned that dangerous levels of heat index may cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion. Heat stroke is also probable with continued exposure to heat.

The OCD noted that nearly all regions are experiencing heat indices from 33°C to 41°C, which are under the “extreme caution" level.

In the extreme caution level, heat cramps and heat exhaustion are possible and continuing activity could lead to heat stroke.

Nepomuceno reminded the public to stay in shaded or well-ventilated areas, wear lightweight clothing, and drink at least eight glasses of water daily.

He also suggested using cold compresses or ice packs and wearing hats, caps, or umbrellas outdoors as protection from the extreme heat. — Joviland Rita/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
