LTFRB warns against overloading amid post-Holy Week rush

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board on Sunday issued a warning to public utility vehicle drivers against overloading, as a surge of travelers was expected to return to Metro Manila following the Holy Week break.

“Sa ating mga driver, huwag tayong mag-overload lalo na hindi natin hawak 'yung sitwasyon na ganyan dahil ang dami ngayong pasahero,” LTFRB spokesperson Ariel Inton said in an interview with Super Radyo dzBB.

(To our drivers, do not overload—especially during times like these when we can’t fully control the situation, given the large volume of passengers.)

Inton also addressed passengers, urging them not to ride overloaded vehicles for their own safety.

“Sa ating mga pasahero naman, alam natin nagmamadali kayo o kaya gusto niyo makasakay kaagad. Eh huwag tayong pumatol sa ganyan. Alam natin magiging mapanganib sa inyo,” he added.

(To our passengers, we understand you’re in a hurry or eager to find a ride, but please don’t take the risk. We know how dangerous it can be.)

The warning comes after 38 individuals were reportedly injured when an allegedly overloaded jeepney bound for a resort overturned in Miag-ao, Iloilo.

In addition to overloading concerns, Inton reminded the public to help ensure their own safety by reporting illegal bus terminals.

Legitimate terminals must provide clean and accessible restrooms; a secure and comfortable waiting area; and must be equipped with security personnel, CCTV cameras, and functional fire extinguishers.

The Department of Transportation and the LTFRB have announced that they will shut down unauthorized bus terminals operating in Metro Manila after the Holy Week travel period.

Inton also urged the public to report cases of overcharging and the operation of “colorum” or unauthorized PUVs.

Complaints may be submitted via email to ncr@ltfrb.gov.ph or by calling 1342 or (02) 8925-7366.

PUVs caught overloading, overcharging, or undercharging passengers may face the following penalties:

  • First offense: P5,000 fine
  • Second offense: P10,000 fine and 30-day impoundment of the vehicle
  • Third offense: P15,000 fine and cancellation of Certificate of Public Convenience (CPC)
