Japan PM seeks further East, South China Sea talks with PH

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba expressed on Tuesday his commitment to deepening discussions with the Philippines to counter attempts to alter the status quo in the East and South China Seas.

Speaking at a joint press conference with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., Ishiba also underscored the need for cooperation in promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific anchored in the rule of law.

“On regional and international developments, I exchanged views with His Excellency, the President. I hope our two nations will continue close communication to oppose attempts to change the status quo in the East and South China Seas by force or coercion, and to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Ishiba said.

Marcos, for his part, reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to its strategic partnership with Japan—“a country that shares our ideals and aspirations of upholding democratic institutions and a rules-based international order.”

He also announced that the two countries have agreed to begin negotiations on an Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA), which would enhance logistical cooperation between their armed forces.

“Japan has been instrumental in helping us pursue our aspiration for peace and friendship with all nations—with strength and with integrity,” Marcos said.

Ishiba added that bilateral security cooperation is being further strengthened, and noted that discussions on a future agreement for information security are also underway. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
