West Philippine Sea label back on Google Maps
The West Philippine Sea is visible again on Google Maps as of Thursday morning after the label disappeared for a while.
As of 7:20 a.m., the West Philippine Sea label was spotted again on Google Maps, located in the waters west of Luzon.
"The label was temporarily missing due to a technical issue -- it's now back on Maps," Google said in a statement.
The label was seen missing on Wednesday, but zooming in the area would still show the label “Scarborough Shoal,” a common fishing ground within the Philippines’ 200 nautical miles exclusive economic zone.
Google had said that the West Philippine Sea has always been on Google Maps but the label was recently made "easier to see."
In an administrative order by former president Benigno Aquino III in 2012, the Philippines officially named areas on the western side of the archipelago as the West Philippine Sea.
"The maritime areas on the western side of the Philippine archipelago are hereby named the West Philippine Sea. These areas include the Luzon Sea as well as the waters around, within and adjacent to the Kalayaan Island Group and Bajo De Masinloc, also known as Scarborough Shoal,” Administrative Order 29 read. —Giselle Ombay with reports from Mariel Celine Serquiña/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
