China ‘advises’ PH politicians not to use suspected spy issue against it

China said it is coordinating with Philippine authorities to obtain information about the Chinese man caught with suspected spy equipment near government offices in Metro Manila, and "advised" Philippine politicians not to use the matter to "propagate China-related issues."

Authorities on Tuesday arrested a Chinese man with supposed "spying" equipment near the Commission on Elections (Comelec) building in Intramuros, Manila, after days of monitoring him and a colleague going around near other government offices.

According to a report on 24 Oras on Thursday, China’s Foreign Ministry said that it has no interest in interfering with the Philippines' internal affairs.

"We will not interfere and have no interest in interfering in the relevant internal affairs of the Philippines," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun during his regular press conference on Wednesday.

"We also advise certain politicians in the Philippines not to use it as an opportunity to propagate China-related issues and make groundless accusations for selfish gains," he added.

Earlier, Comelec said that no disturbance was monitored in its systems after the arrest, while Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro said the situation was "quite alarming.''  — Sherylin Untalan/BM, GMA Integrated News
