Over 2,700 arrested in election gun ban —Comelec

More than 2,700 have been arrested so far for violating the election gun ban, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

From January 12 up to May 1, the total number of those arrested for gun ban violations was 2,787 based on Comelec data, according to a report by Christian Maño on Super Radyo dzBB on Saturday.

Of this number, 2,668 were civilians, 47 security guards, 19 members of the Philippine National Police, and 16 members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

The total number of firearms confiscated during operations and at checkpoints reached 2,870.

This includes 2,589 small firearms, 112 replicas, 70 explosives, 58 light weapons, 32 airsoft guns, and more than 10,000 various bullets.

The election period for the May 2025 polls began on January 12, and with this, the gun ban was put in effect. Checkpoints were also installed since then to enforce the gun ban.

At checkpoints, only visual inspections are allowed. Police are prohibited from opening a vehicle’s trunk or glove compartment, as well as dismounting or frisking passengers.

The Commission on Human Rights last week urged the strict enforcement of the election gun ban and stronger security protocols for campaign activities following a string of election-related attacks, including the killing of a mayoral candidate.

Election Day is on Monday, May 12.

The election period and gun ban meanwhile will be in effect until June 11, 2025. —KG, GMA Integrated News
