DOJ forms team to probe killing of ex-Kalibo mayor Dayang
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has formed a special investigation team on new cases (SITN) to probe the killing of former Kalibo, Aklan mayor and veteran journalist Juan “Johnny” Dayang.
According to the DOJ, two designated prosecutors will convene a team composed of investigators from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the National Bureau of Investigation.
“They are tasked with leading and supervising the fact-finding process, gathering and securing evidence, and facilitating the filing of appropriate charges, as warranted by the findings,” the DOJ said in a statement on Tuesday.
It said the SITN is directed to submit regular progress reports to the DOJ.
Dayang was gunned down in Barangay Andagao on April 29 by an unidentified assailant.
He was known for his long-standing service in the media industry and was the president emeritus of the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc.
The PNP has also launched an investigation to identify the motive and perpetrator. — Joahna Lei Casilao/VBL, GMA Integrated News
