No serious security threats on eve of elections, says PNP
The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Sunday that strict measures remain in place to ensure a safe and peaceful May 12 national and local elections even as no serious threats have been monitored days prior to it.
PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo said the concentration of police deployment on Monday, election day, will be at polling centers, election hubs, checkpoints and border controls, and areas with election-related activities.
So far on election eve, she said the PNP has not yet seen any security threat that may impede the polls that will begin as early as 5 a.m.
“Wala naman tayong natatanggap na anumang seryosong banta na maaaring makapag-disrupt sa pag-conduct ng election, pero hindi tayo nagku-kumpiyansa. Patuloy po ‘yung ating intelligence gathering and monitoring kasama ‘yung ibang law enforcement agencies para hindi tayo malusutan ng anumang seryosong banta,” Fajardo said in a Super Radyo dzBB interview.
(We have not received any serious threats that could disrupt the conduct of the election, but we are not lowering our guard. Our intelligence gathering and monitoring will continue, along with other law enforcement agencies so that no serious threat will sneak up on us.)
The PNP is currently on full alert to ensure that the midterm polls will be peaceful, fair and orderly.
At the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), public information office chief Police Major Hazel Asilo also gave assurance that Metro Manila remains “safe and orderly” a day before the midterm polls.
“Sa kasalukuyan, wala tayong natatanggap or nako-confirm na security threat or kung anumang planong destabilisasyon, pero patuloy pa rin ‘yung ating ginagawang intelligence buildup at monitoring para hindi po tayo mabulaga kung sakali man na merong mga nagpa-plano na gawing magulo ang ating halalan,” Asilo said.
(Right now, we haven't received or confirmed any security threat or any destabilization plan, but we are still doing intelligence buildup and monitoring so that we are ready if there are those planning to disrupt the elections.)
She pointed out the NCR is in the green category of the Commission on Elections (Comelec), and therefore does not have election hotspots. —RF, GMA Integrated News
