MMDA: 6,100 kilos of trash collected in Metro Manila on Election Day
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Tuesday said a total of 6.1 tons or 6,100 kilograms of trash were collected in the National Capital Region on Election Day on Monday.
In its report, MMDA said 288 bags of garbage were picked up from 17 cities and a town in Metro Manila.
The area with the most trash collected is Malabon with 1.48 tons or 1,480 kilos, followed by Manila with 0.97 tons, Parañaque with 0.72 tons, and District I-B in Quezon City with 0.59 tons.
Environmental advocacy group EcoWaste Coalition earlier called for a “basura-free” elections this year.
In a statement, EcoWaste asked local and national candidates to comply with the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, and refrain from littering as they conclude their campaign events on May 10.
"As the official campaign period ends this Saturday, we appeal to all candidates to ensure that their remaining activities do not contribute to further environmental degradation,” Zero-Waste campaigner Cris Luague said.
“Please do not turn the venues of your miting de avance into dumpsites. Enforce RA 9003 and the 'clean as you go' policy, as well as implement a 'no smoking, no vaping' policy,” Luague added.
