Comelec precinct finder receives over 1M hacking attempts — Laudiangco

Comelec precinct finder receives over 1M hacking attempts — Laudiangco

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) online precinct finder website has received more than 1.45 million hacking attempts from May 11 to May 14, 2025, an official said Wednesday.

Comelec spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco said the poll body monitored a total of 76.81 million visits for the online precinct finder since May 11.

Of the figures, 46.17 million were verified as legitimate searches and 1.45 million unsuccessful hacking attempts.

The rest, Laudiangco said, were considered as Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks.

“Ang nakikita namin na gustong gawin by DDOs ay i-down website at idamay ang election results website,” said Laudiangco.

(We think the DDOs attacks are meant to take down the website and the election results website.)

As for the Comelec website, Laudiangco said it has received 113.71 million visits during the three-day period. There were at least 1.75 million confirmed hacking attacks against the website.

“Nakakatuwa dahil ang security in place na nilatag ng DICT at Comelec cybersecurity division, gumagana naman po. Muli po, hiling natin sa ating mga kababayan, hindi na po tayo nakikipagtalo sa mga hackers. Magagaling po talaga kayo, wala naman pong dapat nang patunayan. Ang website at precinct finder, nilatag yan para tulungan ang ating mga kabababayan. Hiling natin ‘wag naman sana ipagkait ang tamang impormasyon,” said Garcia.

(We’re glad because the security measures of DICT and Comelec cybersecurity division are working. We’re calling on the public to stop the hacking attempts. The website and precinct finder were put up to help Filipinos.)

“Sa nagkalat na fake news at disinformation ngayon, kailangang kailangan ng trusted na source of information at ang pangunahin galing Comelec ay ang website,” he added.

(At this time that fake news and disinformation is proliferating, Filipinos need a trusted source of information. For the Comelec, that is our website.)

In April, the poll body said there have been unsuccessful cyber attacks on the Commission on Election's website and 60,000 failed attempts to hack its internet voting system for Filipinos overseas. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
