Suarez: Romualdez has ‘supermajority’ to continue House leadership
Leyte 1st District Representative Martin Romualdez is likely to continue his leadership of the House of Representatives in the 20th Congress, according to Deputy Speaker David “Jay-Jay” Suarez.
Suarez claimed that Romualdez enjoys the support of more than two-thirds of the elected lawmakers. He said that's at least 240 lawmakers out of the 315 who were recently elected to sit in the lower chamber.
“This is already a supermajority,” said Suarez, who is also the treasurer of the dominant Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) party.
“The Speaker has the numbers.”
He further explained that as of Saturday, May 17, that “no less than 240 members have already signed the manifesto of support—and that number keeps climbing.”
“This is not just about party politics. It’s about unity, output, and trust in the Speaker’s steady hand and principled leadership,” he said.
Suarez said the initiative was backed by lawmakers from all major blocs—including Lakas-CMD, National Unity Party (NUP), Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), Nacionalista Party (NP), Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), and the Party-list Coalition Foundation Inc. (PCFI).
“With this kind of broad support, any attempt to challenge the Speaker’s leadership is simply unrealistic,” Suarez said.
While no formal public ceremony has been set, the lawmaker said that a full declaration of support is expected before the opening of the 20th Congress in July.
“The House wants stability and progress, and Speaker Romualdez delivers both,” he said. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
