DOTr: EDSA rehab to start mid-June

DOTr: EDSA rehab to start mid-June

The rehabilitation of EDSA is expected to start in the middle of June, according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Tuesday.

In a post on X, GMA Integrated News’ Joseph Morong reported that DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon made the statement during the official’s inspection of the EDSA busway stations.

The DOTr, Department of Public Works and Highway, and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority met Monday to finalize plans for the EDSA Rebuild Program.

“Nag-meeting kami ng DPWH at MMDA kahapon. At ngayon dahil nga kumplikado itong pagre-rebuild natin ng EDSA, ang target ay middle of June. 'Yun ang talagang kailangan masimulan na,” Dizon told reporters.

(We had a meeting with the DPWH and MMDA yesterday. And now, because this is a complicated rebuilding of EDSA, the target is mid-June. That's when it really needs to start.)

The rehabilitation of EDSA is part of the country's hosting preparations for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit next year, the DOTr earlier said.

It added that the EDSA Busway will continue to operate amid the rehabilitation works. The EDSA Busway lane will be moved and will use one lane of private vehicles.

Among the first areas to be affected by to the rebuilding of EDSA will be from Roxas up to Guadalupe.

DOTr is proposing for Skyway management to free up a portion of their roads for affected motorists.

According to DOTr, the rehabilitation of EDSA will take two years.

DOTr has advised the public to expect heavy traffic during the rehabilitation of EDSA.

The department, other concerned government agencies, and local governments are preparing measures to ease the expected heavy traffic.

“Maga-announce kami very soon ng ating kailangan gawin para kahit papaano, alam naman natin na magtatrapik 'yan sobra. Hindi natin itatanggi 'yan. Kailangan maintindihan ng mga kababayan natin 'yun," Dizon said.

(We will announce very soon what we need to do as we know that there will be heavy traffic. We will not deny that. Our countrymen need to understand that.)

“Pero hindi naman wala tayong gagawin. Sabi nga ng Pangulo kahapon kailangan 'yung pang-araw-araw na pangangailangan ng mga kababayan natin kahit papaano maibsan man lang natin nang kaunti,” he added.

(But it’s not like we will do nothing. The President said yesterday that we need to somehow ease the inconvenience to be experienced by our countrymen.) —Joviland Rita/AOL, GMA Integrated News
