PNP chief Marbil's potential successors named

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday revealed several names of potential successors to Police General Rommel Marbil, whose extended term is set to expire on June 7.

In a press briefing, PNP public information office chief Police Colonel Randulf Tuaño said the following are qualified to lead the PNP:

  • Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., deputy chief for administration of the PNP
  • Lieutenant General Robert Rodriguez, deputy chief for operations of the PNP
  • Lieutenant General Edgar Alan Okubo, chief of the directorial staff of the PNP
  • Police Major General Nicolas Torre III, chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group
  • Police Major General Anthony Aberin, chief of the National Capital Region Police Office

Tuaño cited qualifications based on the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Act of 1990 as well as the usual considerations in picking a PNP chief.

“Ito ay manggagaling sa listahan ng National Police Commission na ibibigay sa ating Pangulo na ang pagpipilian po, ang wording siya po ay the most senior and qualified officer in the service,” he said.

(This will come from the list of the National Police Commission that will be given to our President who will choose the most senior and qualified officer in the service.)

“Basta po may ranggo na Police Brigadier General ay qualified na po na maging kandidato po sa pagiging next chief,” he added.

(Policemen with a rank of police brigadier general are qualified to be candidates for the next chief.)

Tuaño added that the members of the PNP Command Group are the usual candidates for the top post.

In February, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. extended the term of Marbil by four months. Marbil reached the compulsory retirement age of 56 on February 7.  — VBL, GMA Integrated News
