House OKs bill extending terms of barangay, SK officials to 6 years
The House of Representatives on Monday approved on third and final reading the bill seeking to extend the term of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials from three years to six.
House Bill No. 11287 received 153 affirmative votes, four negative votes, and one abstention. It seeks to provide a transitory provision which grants all incumbent barangay and SK officials elected last October 30, 2023 to remain in office until the next elections in May 2029, unless sooner removed or suspended for cause.
Further, the bill also sets a two-term limit for barangay officials and one-term limit for SK officials.
If signed into law, the synchronized barangay and SK elections will be held every six years on the second Monday of May starting in 2029.
The upcoming barangay and SK elections will be held on December 1 this year. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/BM, GMA Integrated News
