PH seeks global support for UN Security Council bid at Independence Day event in NY

NEW YORK - Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to multilateralism and global peace as he laid out the country’s priorities in its bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027-2028 term.

Speaking before more than 300 diplomats and guests during the diplomatic reception commemorating the 127th anniversary of Philippine independence, Manalo emphasized the Philippines’ role as Asia’s first republic and its longstanding dedication to equality among nations.

“The Philippines will bring to the Security Council 80 years of multilateral experience, a tradition of principled diplomacy, and a readiness to listen, engage, and lead with purpose,” Manalo said in his keynote address at the Philippine Center in New York.

“If elected to the Council, we will uphold the UN Charter with sincerity and resolve,” he pledged.

Manalo underscored that the Philippines’ candidacy builds upon its solid track record as a reliable partner, pathfinder, and peacemaker within the global community.

“We stand for multilateralism that does not retreat in the face of challenge, crisis, or fragmentation. Amidst turmoil or paralysis, we seek solutions, we seek new milestones, we persevere in reaching common ground,” he declared.

For his part, Ambassador Antonio M. Lagdameo, Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the UN, highlighted that the campaign for the Philippines’ UNSC seat has been ongoing for years, underscoring the country’s commitment to help solve global challenges.

“This is a day of great pride for all Filipinos, wherever we may be. It reminds us to value the freedoms we enjoy today and to celebrate our rich culture and identity,” Lagdameo said.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., in a video message played at the reception, emphasized that the Philippines has consistently worked to promote understanding, healing, and rebuilding across the world.

“You can count on the Philippines to be the same tried and tested partner, pathfinder, and peacemaker in the Council,” the President said, urging the international community to support the country’s bid in the elections slated for June 2026.

The Philippines is aiming to represent the Asia-Pacific Group in the 2026 Security Council elections. The last time the country served on the Council was in 2004-2005.

The UN Security Council, composed of 15 members — five permanent and ten elected — holds the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security in accordance with the UN Charter. —KG, GMA Integrated News
