BuCor seizes 3.6 kilos of shabu, 60 grams of cannabis in prison farms
A total of 3.648.0268 kilograms of shabu and 60.3141 grams of cannabis or marijuana were confiscated from various operating prisons and penal farms nationwide, the Bureau of Corrections announced Monday.
“These figures are not just numbers,” BuCor Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr. said in a statement.
“They represent a concerted effort to curb the flow of illegal drugs into facilities designed for rehabilitation rather than further entrenchment in criminal behavior,” he added.
According to BuCor, the following amount of illegal substances were recovered:
- New Bilibid Prison - 2166.2705 grams of meth and 58.6001 of cannabis
- Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm - 26.7488 grams of meth
- Leyte Regional Prison - 8.7621 grams of meth
- Davao Prison and Penal Farm - 410.2696 grams of meth and 1.7140 of cannabis
- San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm - 1032.7887 grams of meth
Meanwhile, no items were reported to have been confiscated from the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm and the Correctional Institution for Women.
The bureau said the drugs were turned over to Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency for proper disposition.
Catapang, however, warned that the battle against illegal drugs remains to be challenging. BuCor said it seeks to reduce the entry of illegal substances through rigorous screening of incoming visitors.
In November 2024, BuCor obtained full-body scanners that can detect prohibited items that may be smuggled by visitors of persons deprived of liberty. —AOL, GMA Integrated News
