PHIVOLCS: No tsunami threat to PH after strong Russia earthquake
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Sunday afternoon said there is no threat of tsunami to the country after a strong earthquake hit Russia.
"No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data," PHIVOLCS said in its Tsunami Information No. 1 issued at 1:53 p.m.
This came after a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Russia's Kuril Islands at 1:38 p.m. (PH time) on Sunday, the German Research Center for Geosciences said.
The United States Geological Survey and the Pacific Tsunami Warning System however recorded the earthquake at magnitude 7.
On Wednesday, July 30, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake hit Russia's Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula.
PHIVOLCS issued a tsunami alert that morning for coastal areas in the eastern part of the Philippines, but lifted the alert in the afternoon. —KG, GMA Integrated News
