AFP says military does not tolerate hazing amid probe on soldier’s death
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Tuesday said the organization does not tolerate hazing following the investigation into the death of a Philippine Army personnel in Maguindanao del Sur.
In a statement, the AFP pointed out that the military is a professional institution built on discipline, integrity, and respect for human dignity and that these values are instilled in every soldier from pre-entry training and reinforced throughout their service.
“We do not and will never tolerate hazing, physical abuse, maltreatment or any form of degrading treatment,” the AFP said.
According to the military organization, AFP chief General Romeo Brawner Jr. has issued a clear and uncompromising directive to all units to uphold the highest standards of military conduct and discipline.
He also urged them to reject all forms of hazing, physical abuse, maltreatment, and degrading treatment, it added.
“The AFP remains fully committed to cultivating a culture of professionalism, mutual respect, and accountability. All personnel, regardless of rank or tenure, must be treated with dignity in every setting whether in training, duty, ceremonies, or daily interactions,” it said.
Two Philippine Army officers have been relieved from their post amid the investigation into the death of Private Charlie G. Patigayon on July 30. The Philippine Army said 21 enlisted personnel are also among those being investigated.
The 6th Infantry Division (6ID) said Patigayon collapsed during a “traditional reception activity” held at the unit's headquarters.
“Reception rites - long observed as a tradition to welcome new members into the military community - must be conducted with utmost consideration for the health and safety of our soldiers,” the 6ID said.
“These activities must remain within the bounds of existing military policies and regulations. Any deviation or breach that compromises the welfare of personnel is subject to disciplinary action,” it added.
The soldier was immediately brought to the nearest hospital and placed under intensive medical care but he was declared dead the following day, the 6ID said. —AOL, GMA Integrated News
