Bad weather causes floods, landslides in parts of PH
The inclement weather has caused flooding and landslides in various parts of the country on Wednesday.
According to Saleema Refran’s report in “24 Oras”, a continuous surge of muddy floodwaters flowed through Barangay Jaybanga in Lobo, Batangas last Monday afternoon.
The roads were almost engulfed by the floodwater after the river overflowed due to the heavy downpour, the report said.
Some parts of Purok 3-Tiwi in Capalonga, Camarines Norte were also submerged in flood.
In Calayan, Cagayan, residents experienced a heavy rainfall alongside gusty winds.
Meanwhile, a road in Uyugan, Batanes was covered in mud and rocks following a mudflow. A similar situation also occurred in Dingalan, Aurora which caused the temporary closure of some roads.
Further, several students of Visayas State University (VSU) in Baybay City, Leyte evacuated from their dorms after the school grounds were flooded on Tuesday evening.
“May mga dormitories po kasi na malapit sa bundok tapos since malakas ‘yung ulan, ‘yung collected water po, umabot na po doon sa tinutuluyan ng ating mga estudyante,” said VSU chief security Gerald Rivera.
(There are dormitories located near the mountains, and since the rain was heavy, the collected water reached the students' residences.)
The students have already returned to their dormitories on Wednesday morning. But their face-to-face classes have been cancelled.
On the other hand, several parts of Negros Occidental are also flooded. Some barangays in Kabankalan City have waist-deep floods and rescue boats had to be used for evacuation.
A road in Sipalay City was also closed for the meantime following a landslide.
In Mindanao, residents of Barangay Tapian in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte also experienced floods.
The strong winds also battered Barangay Poblacion in Matalam, Cotabato. The roofs were blown off and the walls of several houses were destroyed.
State weather bureau PAGASA said that the inclement weather in various parts of the country is due to the low pressure area and the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News
