DFA: China travel advisory 'mischaracterizes' situation in PH
The Philippines on Monday countered China's latest travel warning, saying it "mischaracterizes the situation" in the country.
Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Angelica Escalona said "instances of crimes reported or known to law enforcement authorities, including those perpetrated by Chinese nationals against their compatriots, are being vigorously addressed by relevant law enforcement authorities."
China has warned tourists about visiting the Philippines, citing worsening security and crimes targeting Chinese nationals.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a travel advisory dated August 30 reminded its citizens to assess the risks of traveling to the country, claiming "public security in the Philippines has been unrestrained, and illegal and criminal cases against Chinese citizens have been repeated."
An English translation of the ministry's travel bulletin was posted by the Chinese Embassy in Manila on its X account on Sunday.
China's warning was issued days after Senator Panfilo Lacson alleged that Chinese sleeper agents and operatives from China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) are operating in the Philippines.
"Chinese citizens who intend to visit the Philippines are advised to make risk assessment and travel arrangements carefully," the updated advisory said.
Escalona maintained that the Philippine government has been engaging with relevant stakeholders on the crime cases, involving Chinese nationals.
"The Philippines remains committed to constructively addressing matters of mutual concern with China," she said, citing the July joint consular meeting in Beijing, where "both sides discussed concerns and measures, and expressed readiness to deepen law enforcement cooperation.” —KG, GMA Integrated News
