Discayas' allegations to be probed by independent commission —Marcos

President Marcos Jr. said all allegations made by the Discayas would be thoroughly investigated.

President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. said all allegations made by Sarah and Curlee Discaya would be thoroughly investigated.

Speaking to reporters in Cambodia, Marcos said this would be the job of the independent commission, the body that will look into the anomalous and ghost flood control projects.

''So, we will examine all the allegations that have been made. Ang lumalabas talaga dito mula noong nasimulan itong imbestigasyon at lahat niyan ay matagal na talaga kaya ang lalim na ng – ang lalim na nung kumbaga sa amag eh napakalalim na sa sistema,'' Marcos said.

(What was shown here is that this has been ongoing for a long time. The system has been so deep.)

''The system of this kind of corruption has been institutionalized. And if we will look at the allegations that have been made, nagsimula sa 2003 pa ito,'' he added.

On Monday, the Discayas alleged that certain lawmakers and officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) were involved in corrupt practices in flood control projects. Most congressmen denied the accusation made by the controversial couple.

Marcos was also asked for comment made by Curlee Discaya that his cousin, Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, was mentioned to him repeatedly by at least one politician.

In response, Marcos said those in higher position usually ''suffer'' that notion. Still, this allegation will be looked into to determine if the Discayas were just dropping names and if there are substantial information from this.

''Alam mo kaming lahat suffer from that ano -- sasabihin 'utos ni President,' 'utos ni Secretary,' 'utos ni ganito,' tapos hindi naman totoo,'' Marcos said.

(All of us suffer from that... someone would say that's the directive of the President, of the Secretary, however, they were not true.)

''Kaya we will have to look. Eh kung totoo, eh ‘di may problema na talagang inutos,'' he added.

(So, we will have to look. If it's true, then there's a problem why it was ordered.)

Discaya on Tuesday clarified that he did not have any personal transactions with Romualdez.

Marcos, meanwhile, ensured that the commission would be truly independent, noting that there will be no politicians there but only investigators and lawyers.

Asked about the protection being sought by the Discayas, Marcos said there is a system for granting protection over someone who can be considered as a witness.

''If they qualify as witnesses who will testify, then the state is, of course, willing to provide them with protection,'' Marcos said.

''And even before that, if there is a recognized threat, then, of course, we will protect them. Not because they are making allegation, not because they are part of the investigation, but because they are Filipinos. They need to be protected against any kind of threat that they are facing,'' he added. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
