No tsunami threat to PH after earthquake in Kamchatka, Russia — PHIVOLCS
The magnitude-7.5 earthquake that hit Kamchatka in Russia does not pose a tsunami threat to the Philippines, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Saturday.
In an advisory, PHIVOLCS said there was "no tsunami threat" to the country following the quake, which occurred at 10:38 a.m. at 53.1°N, 160.4°E near the east coast of the Kamchatka peninsula.
It had a depth of 10 kilometers.
"Hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km of the earthquake epicenter," PHIVOLCS said.
"This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake," it added.
According to a report by Reuters, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) recorded the earthquake at magnitude-7.1, while the United States Geological Survey pegged it at magnitude-7.4.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning System said there was a threat of a possible tsunami from the earthquake, Reuters said. — Jamil Santos/ VDV, GMA Integrated News
