PH UNGA delegation to push for non-permanent seat at UNSC — DFA

The Philippine delegation to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will increase their efforts to pursue a non-permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council for the 2027 to 2028 term.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said that the delegation for the UNGA on September 21 to 27 will be led by Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro.

“She will reaffirm the Philippines' strong commitment to multilateralism and a rules-based order during the UNGA High-Level Week,” the statement read.

The DFA noted that the delegation will focus on calls for a “stronger UN,” which promotes peace, security, climate action, migrant protection, and sustainable development.

Earlier, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that he would no longer attend the UNGA and had delegated his engagements for the event to Lazaro.

Presidential Communications Office Acting Secretary Dave Gomez said that Marcos intended to focus on local issues instead. — Jiselle Anne C. Casucian/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
