AFP calls out disinformation on Zaldy Co's ex-aide

AFP issues disinformation alert

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Friday issued an advisory about disinformation going around in social media regarding the ex-aide of Ako Bicol Party-list Representative Zaldy Co.

In one post, Orly Guteza, the former aide of Co, was said to be an active Marine. The post also said AFP chief of staff Romeo Brawner Jr. allowed the military to be used as delivery boys in the alleged kickback scheme in flood control projects.

"FALSE CLAIM: An image and narrative allege that an active-duty Marine was used for illicit activities, based on his supposed 'testimony,'" the AFP said.

"FACT: The individual mentioned, Mr. Orly Guteza, has been a civilian since his retirement on June 30, 2020. His private work for a legislator began four years later in 2024. The central claim is chronologically impossible and therefore fabricated," it said.

Guteza, who identified himself as a former security consultant of Co, on Thursday told the Senate blue ribbon committee in a hearing that he personally delivered luggage containing money to the residences of Co and former speaker Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez. Both Co and Romualdez have denied receiving kickbacks from flood control projects.

Guteza said that he is a former member of the Philippine Marines and was hired as a security aide of Co in December 2024.

The AFP also called out a social media post showing a photo of AFP officials with Romualdez.

"FALSE CLAIM: A photo of AFP officials with the then House Speaker is presented as evidence of an improper allegiance," the AFP said.

"FACT: The photo shows a routine and official courtesy call. Such professional meetings between military leadership and officials from other government branches are a standard, transparent procedure. The context of the photo has been maliciously twisted to create a false narrative," it added.

"These posts are designed to create division and discredit the integrity of your AFP," it said.

"These are clear attempts to sow doubt and erode trust in your Armed Forces. The AFP is a professional and disciplined organization serving the Filipino people with honor and integrity," the AFP added.

The military then called on the public "not to be swayed by disinformation but to remain discerning and uphold the truth." —KG, GMA Integrated News
