Habagat, Mirasol, Nando, Opong affected 3.5M people —NDRRMC

A total of 3,537,686 people or 936,566 families have been affected by the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat, Tropical Cyclones Mirasol, Nando, and Opong, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Based on NDRRMC’s 6 a.m. report on Tuesday, 105,611 people or 29,234 families of the total affected population were staying in evacuation centers, while 82,947 people or 21,804 families were taking shelter in other places.

The affected individuals were reported in all regions of the country except for Northern Mindanao and the Davao Region.

Most of the affected population were reported in Bicol with 1,296,134, followed by Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) with 519,650 and Western Visayas with 461,404.

Habagat and the three tropical cyclones caused incidents of flooding, storm surge, collapsed structures, landslides, tornadoes, vehicular accidents, and drowning across the affected regions.

The reported death toll due to the recent bad weather condition remained at 27, and 4 of them have been validated, according to the NDRRMC.

Aside from this, the NDRRMC also reported that 16 persons were missing and 33 people were injured.

Damage to agriculture worth P1,010,939,935 and to infrastructure worth P979,609,901 were reported due to the impact of Habagat and the tropical cyclones.

A total of 21,897 houses were damaged—18,289 partially and 3,608 were totally damaged.

Fifty of the 294 affected roads and 14 of the 59 affected bridges are still not passable. 

Power supply remained interrupted in 66 of the 225 affected areas. Water supply problems were still reported in four of the 16 affected areas. Communication line issues were still encountered in 27 of the 49 affected areas.

Of the 178 affected seaports, 28 were still non-operational. Due to this, a total of 2,606 passengers, 928 rolling cargoes, and 21 vessels were stranded.

The affected airport in Mimaropa, meanwhile, has returned to its regular operations.

Classes in 1,156 areas and work schedules in 915 areas have been suspended due to the threat of the bad weather.

A state of calamity was declared in the following areas:

  • Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte
  • Cagayan Province
  • Masbate Province
  • Ibajay, Aklan
  • Pagalungan, Maguindanao del Sur

Assistance worth P204,705,463 has been provided to the victims so far, according to the NDRRMC. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
