LGUs urged to secure flu vaccines for seniors amid rising cases, full hospitals

Health advocates are calling on local government units (LGUs) to act swiftly and secure influenza vaccines for senior citizens as cases of influenza-like illnesses surge nationwide and hospitals approach full capacity.

In Quezon City, reported influenza-like illnesses have already exceeded the epidemic threshold, with 152 cases recorded between August 31 and September 13.

The Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PHAPI) also noted a 10 percent increase in patient admissions, warning that many hospitals are already “mostly full” as the rainy season worsens.

“With vaccine allocations from the national government still uncertain this late in the year, seniors must be protected without delay,” said Dr. Mikaella Jeleene Salinas Asoy, lead convenor of the senior citizens’ coalition Bayan Bakuna.

“LGUs should immediately coordinate with the DOH for available allocations or, if none are provided, procure vaccines locally and roll out vaccination drives before cases surge further.”

Health experts warn that older adults face the highest risk of severe flu complications, including pneumonia and heart attacks. Hospitalization can cost ?10,000 to ?30,000, a steep burden for many Filipino families. Transmission within households is also a major concern, with infection rates ranging from 13% to 32%, often fueled by school-age children who may unknowingly bring the virus home.

“The reported spike in cases highlights the urgent need for preventive measures,” Dr. Asoy added. “Vaccination remains the most proven, cost-effective way to protect the elderly population.”

Advocates also urged families to be proactive by accompanying elderly relatives to barangay health centers and inquiring about vaccine availability. Such community demand, they said, can encourage LGUs to prioritize influenza vaccination programs and better protect vulnerable populations.

Bayan Bakuna, a grassroots senior citizens’ organization, has been advocating for the full implementation of Republic Act 9994 or the Expanded Senior Citizens Act, including the provision of free influenza and pneumococcal vaccines for indigent seniors. — Sherylin Untalan/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
