1 dead after magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Davao Oriental —governor

One person was reported dead after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake rocked Manay, Davao Oriental, Governor Nelson Dayanghirang said Friday.
Interviewed on Balitanghali, Dayanghirang said the victim was from Mati City.
“Meron na kaming confirmed dito sa City of Mati, isang casualty. Isa. Nabagsakan siya ng part ng bahay,” he said.
(We have one confirmed here in the City of Mati, one casualty. The person was hit with a part of a house that collapsed.)
Meanwhile, in a Super Radyo dzBB interview, Mati City, Davao Oriental Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office head Charlie Bagasol said the casualty was a 54-year-old female.
“Natumbahan, nagdaganan siya sa bahay nila. ‘Yan ang nangyari. Dinala ng team natin doon sa hospital but hindi na talaga naabutan siya siguro,” he said.
(A part of their house fell on her. She was brought by our team to the hospital but she did not make it.)
Rescuers also responded to an initial number of 15 students who collapsed, had difficulty breathing and panicked following the earthquake.
Bagasol said preemptive evacuation of residents was held in the city prior to the issuance of a tsunami advisory.

He said some structures in the province have been damaged as authorities continued their assessment of the situation.
Classes and work were suspended in government schools and offices, and residents were prohibited to enter some hospitals for their safety, Dayanghirang said.
“Ang district hospital sa municipality of Manay, in-evacuate muna lahat ng pasyente while ongoing ang assessment kasi hindi na muna puwedeng gamitin talaga ‘yung ospital,” he said.
(All patients were evacuated at the district hospital in the municipality of Manay while assessment is ongoing because the hospital cannot be used.)
Landslides have been reported, and electricity was cut off in a number of areas. Ports, however, were unaffected. —AOL, GMA Integrated News
