DepEd urges LGUs to balance safety, learning amid prolonged class suspensions

DepEd urges LGUs to balance safety, learning amid prolonged class suspensions

The Department of Education (DepEd) called on local government units (LGUs) Tuesday to exercise prudence and balance when deciding to suspend classes, emphasizing the importance of ensuring learning continuity alongside public safety.

“The Department of Education (DepEd) respects the authority of LGUs to suspend classes in the interest of public safety. However, this responsibility must be exercised with balance and prudence,” said DepEd chief media relations officer Dennis Legaspi in a statement.

“While caution is important, extended suspensions can disrupt learning and affect students’ development. Every decision should reflect both care for safety and commitment to learning continuity,” he added.

The Education Department said it will coordinate with Schools Division Offices (SDOs) to deploy alternative learning delivery modes for affected students to ensure that education continues despite disruptions.

The DepEd also urged LGUs to regularly reassess whether extended class suspensions remain necessary, especially as prolonged disruptions can hinder students’ academic progress.

The statement comes as some provinces and cities have declared consecutive days of class suspensions due to weather disturbances, disaster preparedness measures and health precautions.

On Monday, the local government of Laguna has announced the suspension of face-to-face classes in all public and private schools from October 14 to 31, 2025, as a precaution against potential seismic activity along the West Valley Fault.

During this period, students will shift to alternative learning modes, including online and modular classes.

Meanwhile, the Department of Education — National Capital Region on Sunday suspended face-to-face classes (F2F) in all public schools in Metro Manila on Oct. 13 and 14 to give way to disinfection and sanitation amid increasing cases of influenza-like illnesses. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
