Retired general Eduardo R. Ermita

Retired general, former executive secretary, and former Batangas 1st District representative Eduardo Ermita passed away on Saturday, October 18, his family said.

"It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we, the Ermita family, announce the passing of our beloved father, General Eduardo Ramos Ermita (Retired), a dedicated public servant and our guiding light," the family said in a post on Facebook.

"He passed away peacefully today, October 18, 2025, at 8:00am, surrounded by his loving family," the statement read.

Ermita, a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 1957, became deputy chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines from 1986 to 1988.

He also served as executive secretary and as Defense secretary during the term of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as president.

Ermita, who was born in Balayan, Batangas, was also a congressman representing the province's 1st District from 1992 to 2001.

"Our father lived a full life in steadfast service to the Filipino people. As a soldier, he served with honor and dedication during some of the nation's most challenging times," the family said.

"To us, his family, he was simply 'Papa' or 'Lolo Ed'—our source of wisdom, strength, and unconditional love. The lessons he imparted and the values he lived by are the greatest legacy he leaves behind," they added.

"He was a true patriarch, not only of our family but also of the entire First District of Batangas, whose welfare remained his foremost concern until the very end," the statement read.

"We take solace in knowing that his life's work has touched countless others and that his legacy will live on through us and through all who were inspired by his example," the family added.

Interment and funeral details will be announced later by the family.

"We extend our deepest gratitude for your prayers and overwhelming expressions of love and support. Thank you, Papa, for all the great things you have done. You may now rest in peace. We love you!" the family said. —KG, GMA Integrated News
