Portion of Zamboanga City cemetery collapses due to damaged seawall

Some graves in a cemetery in Zamboanga City are nowhere to be found after the soil where the tombs used to stand softened and gave way, causing the graves to fall into the sea.

According to Joseph Morong’s report in “24 Oras” on Monday, the seawall that protected the soil earlier collapsed. This caused the soil to soften from the waves during high tide.

The barangay already reported the destroyed seawall to the city engineer’s office but repairs have not yet been made.

“I am appealing to the national and city government to construct again the seawall sa tabi ng cemetery natin,” said barangay chairman Erolyn Jade Barredo.

The Zamboanga City Engineer’s Office, on the other hand, said it already inspected the damaged seawall and has proposed a cost estimate for the repairs.

Meanwhile, some youngsters in Zamboanga City are trying to earn money by cleaning and repainting tombs while they are on a wellness break from school.

Likewise, some people in Bataan took advantage of the Undas season by offering to clean tombs for P200. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/JMA, GMA Integrated News
