Make public cemeteries PWD-friendly, LGUs asked
The National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) called on local government units and cemetery administrators to make cemeteries and columbaria accessible and safe for persons with disabilities.
The NCDA seeks for provision of ramps, wide and unobstructed pathways, accessible restrooms, resting areas, and designated assistance points in cemeteries and columbaria.
“These measures will allow PWDs and older persons to visit and pay respects to their loved ones with comfort and dignity,” it said in a statement on Friday.
The agency noted that the Republic Act No. 7277, or the Magna Carta for Persons with Disabilities, and the Batas Pambansa Blg. 344 mandates the creation of public spaces and facilities that are barrier-free, ensuring PWDs' mobility, safety, and full participation in society.
“The NCDA also reminds the public to practice courtesy and extend assistance to persons with disabilities, particularly in crowded areas, parking spaces, and transport terminals leading to cemeteries and columbaria,” it added. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/LDF, GMA Integrated News
