Envoy highlights role of maritime cooperation in PH-Japan ties

Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya has underscored the shared maritime identity of Japan and the Philippines.

"Japan, like the Philippines, is obviously a maritime nation. Our economy depends on the sea, our security is shaped by the sea, and our very future is bound to the sea," Endo said in a news release.

Maintaining open and secure maritime routes is essential to both countries' growth, he said.

"That is why stable, secure, and open sea lines of communication, anchored in the principle of freedom of navigation, are essential to our collective prosperity and security," he added.

Endo further reaffirmed Japan's commitment to deepening maritime cooperation with the Philippines, especially in areas such as maritime safety, infrastructure, and disaster response.

"This concept applies equally to maritime security. By joining forces, Japan and the Philippines can mitigate man-made disasters, deter unlawful actions, and keep our seas open for trade, livelihood, and cooperation,” the Japan envoy said.

Endo emphasized Japan's continuing support for a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific-one that strengthens regional partnerships and ensures that the seas remain a bridge of friendship and opportunity. — VBL, GMA Integrated News
