Uwan batters Luzon with storm surge, infra damage, power outages

Storm surge, infrastructure damage, and power outage were reported after Tropical Cyclone Uwan made landfall as a super typhoon over Aurora and crossed several provinces in Luzon, according to reports on GMA Integrated News’ Unang Balita on Monday.

In Aurora, where Uwan made landfall as a super typhoon, strong winds and heavy rains were experienced on Sunday evening, according to a report of Ian Cruz.

Power supply and communication lines were cut.

Some cottages and the storage area of surfboards were damaged due to storm surge.

In Nueva Ecija, strong winds and heavy rains caused electric posts and trees to collapse in barangays San Ricardo, Homestead in Talavera town as well as Manacnac in Palayan town, according to a report of Mariz Umali.

Some roads became impassable.

The Pampanga River already started to overflow.

Meanwhile in Metro Manila, up to chest-deep floods were experienced in Navotas City after a dike in Barangay Bagumbayan South collapsed, according to a report of Bea Pinlac.

A power outage was also encountered in the city.

In Marikina City, the Marikina River has reached a peak water level of 14.5 meters amid the onslaught of Uwan, according to a report of EJ Gomez.

Fallen trees and power lines were also reported in Quezon City and Mandaluyong City. Power outages were also reported.

In San Fernando, La Union, electric cables were seen swinging amid the heavy rains and strong winds. Some tarpaulins were almost scrapped from posts.

The strong winds sent roofs and signages flying in Isabela, according to a report of Jun Veneracion. All the overflowing bridges in the province were not passable.

In Santiago town, there has been no power supply since Sunday evening.

Catanduanes Governor Patrick Azanza said the onslaught of Uwan was a different experience for the locals compared to other cyclones as the super typhoon had strong winds, heavy rains, and strong surges combined.

“Kahapon po ay talaga namang kakaiba ang naging eksperyensya po dito sa Catanduanes. Alam po ng lahat na daanan talaga kami ng bagyo pero ito pong Super Typhoon Uwan ay kakaiba dahil pinaghalo po yung malakas na ulan, malakas na hangin, at may kasamang storm surge,” he told Unang Balita in an interview.

(Yesterday was a really unique experience here in Catanduanes. Everyone knows that we are usually hit by cyclones, but this Super Typhoon Uwan is unique because it was a combination of heavy rain, strong wind, and storm surge.)

Some barangays were submerged in Catanduanes, even the seawall on Imelda Boulevard. Landslides and flashfloods also hit the province.

In Camarines Norte, big waves overflowed beyond the seawall in Daet town, Darlene Cay reported. Many roads were impassable to motorists due to the toppled eclectic posts and trees.

Up to knee-deep floods were experienced in the area.

Power outages and problematic communication lines were also reported.

In Dagupan City, some affected residents were suffering from fever, cough, and colds in evacuation centers, according to a report of GMA Regional TV’s Sendee Salvacio.

Trash was seen floating in the floodwaters.

No power supply in the area after electric posts and trees collapsed.

In Ilocos Sur, a storm surge was reported in Sta. Cruz town, according to a report of Raffy Tima.
