Marcos to agencies: ensure flow of aid for Uwan victims
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Monday directed concerned government agencies to ensure necessary assistance for the victims of Typhoon Uwan.
Presidential Communications Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro said the President tasked Department of Social Welfare and Development Secretary Rex Gatchalian to guarantee that aid reaches all those affected by Super Typhoon Uwan.
The President emphasized immediate rehabilitation efforts for roads damaged by the storm, so that relief operations would not be hampered.
During a situation briefing Monday morning at the Presidential Security Command Operations Center, Marcos also directed Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa to ensure that medical teams are deployed in evacuation centers to monitor the health and safety of evacuees.
Based on government records, at least 71 roads were impassable in Central Luzon and the Cordillera Administrative Region.
According to the Office of Civil Defense, Pangasinan province experienced severe flooding due to Uwan.
The typhoon's onslaught has prompted the evacuation of a total of 476,000 families nationwide, according to the OCD.
Meanwhile, Marcos tasked government offices to continue monitoring the weather situation until Tuesday, November 11.
Weather bureau PAGASA said Uwan is forecast to recurve northwestward today, turn northward by Tuesday, and then northeastward thereafter.
The typhoon may briefly re-intensify while moving southwest of Taiwan before weakening again midweek.
It is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by late Monday night or early Tuesday morning but could re-enter by Wednesday evening as it moves toward Taiwan and the Ryukyu Islands, eventually weakening into a remnant low by Friday.—MCG, GMA Integrated News
