Uwan death toll increases to 27
The reported death toll from Typhoon Uwan has increased to 27, according to The Office of Civil Defense (OCD).
In an update Wednesday morning, the OCD said these deaths were reported in the following areas:
Ifugao – 9
Benguet – 4
Nueva Vizcaya – 3
Mountain Province – 3
Kalinga – 3
Catanduanes – 1
Capiz – 1
Samar – 1
Sulu – 1
Unknown province - 1
Two people were reported missing in the province of Kalinga.
A total of 36 people were reported injured in Nueva Vizcaya, Benguet, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Quezon Province, Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, and Negros Occidental.
Impact
Uwan affected a total of 3,596,174 people or 1,006,149 families in all regions except for Central Visayas and Davao Region, according to the 6 a.m. report of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
Most of the affected individuals were reported in Bicol with 1,414,412, followed by Ilocos Region with 426,884 and Eastern Visayas with 422,392.
Of the affected population, 623,310 people or 171,786 families were staying in evacuation centers while 296,035 people or 84,524 families were taking shelter in other places.
Floods, storm surges, landslides, fallen trees and debris, wave swells, as well as maritime incidents were reported in different areas across the country.
A total of 41,202 houses were damaged — 33,882 partially and 7,320 totally. Damage to infrastructure worth P126,589,000 was also reported.
The NDRRMC said 277 of the 625 affected road sections and 61 of the 78 affected bridge sections remained impassable.
Power, waterPower supply in 410 of the 497 affected areas remained interrupted. Water supply problems were still reported in 18 of the 29 affected areas. Also, communication line issues were still encountered in all 121 affected areas.
An affected airport has returned to operations.
However, 105 of the 194 affected seaports remained non-operational, leaving 1,746 passengers, 522 rolling cargoes, 48 vessels, and 20 motorbancas stranded.
Classes in 1,054 areas and work schedules in 807 areas have been suspended due to Uwan’s threat.
Assistance worth P200,533,087 has been provided to the victims so far, according to the NDRRMC.

Super Typhoon
On November 9, Uwan intensified into a super typhoon and caused life-threatening conditions while getting close to Catanduanes.
Uwan made landfall over Dinalungan, Aurora on the same day. The super typhoon affected the northern and central Luzon as it traversed the Luzon landmass.
On November 11, Uwan exited the Philippine area of responsibility as a typhoon.
According to its 5 a.m. cyclone bulletin, the center of Uwan was estimated at 280 km West of Itbayat, Batanes, outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
Three areas in Luzon remain under Signal No. 1:
- Batanes
- Babuyan Islands (Calayan Is., Dalupiri Is., Fuga Is.)
- The northwestern portion of Ilocos Norte (Burgos, Bangui, Pasuquin, Dumalneg, Pagudpud)
Uwan is forecast to move generally northeastward, re-entering PAR Wednesday morning or afternoon before making landfall over the southwestern coast of Taiwan by afternoon or evening, according to the weather bureau
