Marcos swears in Mendoza as new BIR chief
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Thursday administered the oath of office of new Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Charlito Martin Mendoza.
The oath-taking ceremony took place at Malacañang’s Study Room.
On Wednesday, Presidential Communications Office Acting Secretary Dave Gomez confirmed Mendoza’s appointment to the BIR.
A lawyer, Mendoza replaced Romeo Lumagui Jr. at the helm of the BIR, an attached agency of the Department of Finance (DOF).
The Palace has not yet disclosed the reason for replacing Lumagui, who departed the BIR after its January to June 2025 collection hit P1.554 trillion, or overshooting its target for the period by P4.594 billion.
Prior to his latest appointment, Mendoza served as DOF Undersecretary of the Revenue Operations Group (ROG) and oversaw the operations of the BIR and the Bureau of Customs (BOC).
He also served as District Collector for the BOC Port of Cebu from July 2019 to October 2022, helping the port achieve record-breaking revenue collection and significant milestones in border protection. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
