Marcos confident Oplan Kontra Baha to ease Cebu, PH floods

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Friday expressed confidence that floods would ease in the country through his administration's newly launched program, Oplan Kontra Baha.

The initiative's kickoff was held at Mahiga Creek near the M. Logarta Bridge, located between the cities of Mandaue and Cebu.

"Ang projection natin, ang pangako sa atin... one year... ang pangako sa akin, 'pag ka umulan ulit, hindi na magbabaha," Marcos said in his speech in Cebu province.

(Our projection is after a year, the promise to me is that if rains, flood will no longer happen.)

During the event, the President witnessed the ongoing activities in Mahiga Creek, including dredging, waste removal, cleaning waterways, and removal of illegal structures to restore natural water flow and reduce flooding risks.

Marcos also oversaw additional dredging operations.

Mahiga Creek is part of the nearly 12-kilometer Subangdaku–Mahiga River system, which is considered as a crucial waterway that extends across Cebu City's urban core and surrounding barangays.

The river often overflows during heavy rains because of significant silt buildup and accumulated waste that block the waterways, especially around the Subangdaku Bridge. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
