Marcos highlights Christmas' 'special meaning' for Filipinos

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Sunday highlighted the deep cultural significance of Christmas for Filipinos—including millions of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who return home during the holidays—as he led the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the Kalayaan Grounds in Malacañang.

In his remarks, the President noted that the Philippines’ reputation for having the world’s longest Christmas season reflects the significance of the holiday to Filipinos.

“People cannot understand why that is, but that is because we are Pinoys… Christmas has a special meaning to Filipinos, and that's why we celebrate it very, very seriously and really take the time to once again be with family and with loved ones,” he said.

Marcos noted that the season becomes even more special as it marks the homecoming period for many OFWs who look forward to reuniting with their families.

“That is why it means something special to us Filipinos. It always has, but it continues to mean even more… It is the time to look back, see what has happened, and maybe put down what we are carrying so we can spend more time with the people we love,” he said.

He encouraged the public to embrace the season by slowing down and reconnecting with family.

“When we feel the spirit of Christmas in the air again, we immediately remember what is nice, what is good, what is happy, what is joyous in Christmas. That always includes family and, of course, the kids," he said.

"Christmas is for children—but really, for children of all ages. Whatever age you are, you can still enjoy Christmas just as much as any child,” Marcos added.—MCG, GMA Integrated News
