The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Sunday said the stand of retired military generals and officers denouncing destabilization against the government affirms the shared commitment of both active and retired officers to uphold the Constitution.

“The Armed Forces of the Philippines extends its sincere appreciation to the Association of General and Flag Officers (AGFO) for their Manifesto of Unwavering Support and Solidarity,” the AFP said in a statement.

“This expression of confidence from leaders who dedicated the prime of their lives to service, deeply affirms the shared commitment of both active and retired officers to uphold the Constitution, respect civilian authority, and preserve the professionalism of the military institution," it added.

“We welcome this message as a powerful reminder that unity within the ranks, past and present, remains one of the AFP’s greatest strengths,” it added.

In a manifesto dated Friday, AGFO acknowledged the country’s current political climate and said it was aware of calls urging the AFP to withdraw support from the President.

The group said it “condemns any calls for the AFP to engage in unconstitutional acts or military adventurism.”

AFP said that the statement from retired military leaders shows that the armed forces remain an important piece to the country’s stability.

“The reaffirmation of nonpartisanship and rejection of destabilization reinforces the enduring principles that guide every soldier, airman, sailor, and marine, regardless of status in service,” said AFP.

“The unified voice of our retired and active leaders reaffirms that the AFP remains a pillar of stability and a steadfast guardian of democracy,” it added. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/KG, GMA Integrated News
