Manibela kicks off 3-day nationwide transport strike

Transport group Manibela started its three-day transport strike across the country on Tuesday to protest supposed excessive penalties, non-renewal of franchises, and a supposed payola system.

Some members started gathering near Philcoa in Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City early in the morning, according to a report by Super Radyo dzBB’s Allan Gatus on GMA Integrated News’ Unang Balita.

This is one of the 19 strike centers across Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

According to Manibela, the transport strike aims to call out the supposed excessive penalties, non-renewal of franchises, and payola culture within the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

These policies have affected the livelihood of drivers, the group said.

The strike took place after the long weekend due to the holiday on Monday. Some commuters decided to leave home early to avoid disruptions and seek alternative transportation.

Government agencies have deployed personnel in key areas to manage traffic and assist affected passengers.

Aside from Philcoa, some Manibela members also trooped to Nagtahan in Manila for the protest. —Joviland Rita/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
