DepEd focuses on creative skills under K to 12 curriculum

The Department of Education (DepEd) is strengthening the creativity skills of students under the K to 12 curriculum as part of its reforms, as the government aims for inclusive growth.

During the Parnuay: 3rd Creativity in Philippine Higher Education Summit, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara said creativity should be treated as a core development asset, not just an extracurricular activity.

“This tells us that the imagination does not magically appear in adulthood. So in DepEd, we have deliberately shifted our focus toward stronger foundational learning,” Angara said.

He added that DepEd is ensuring a smooth transition from basic education to higher education and employment by coordinating with the Commission on Higher Education and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.

Citing data from the government, DepEd said the creative economy accounted for more than P1.9 trillion in economic output in 2024.

Angara pointed out that initiatives such as Himala sa Buhangin, Inabel weaving, and burnay pottery in Ilocos Norte, and regional festivals are proof that creative industries thrive when talent is rooted in community and supported by policy.

“This is proof that the creative industry is alive and well far beyond Metro Manila, shaping local economies and strengthening local identities,” he said.

The DepEd secretary also said the agency aims to produce graduates who can move confidently into studios, design labs, production floors, and other creative workplaces that contribute directly to economic growth.
