NGCP sees no power issues for rest of December amid holiday season
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) expressed confidence Wednesday that the country’s power system will not face any issues for the rest of the month amid the holiday season.
“For the rest of the year, wala tayong nakikita na magiging problema sa supply ng kuryente (we are not seeing any problem on the supply of electricity),” NGCP spokesperson Cynthia Alabanza said at a press conference in San Juan City.
Alabanza, however, said “unforeseen circumstances” such as typhoons or unplanned power plant outages could disrupt supply.
“Pero kung walang ibang mangyayari wala tayong nakikitang magiging problema (But if there will no other untoward occurrences, we are not seeing a problem),” she said.
Asked if there are low chances of a red or yellow alert to be hoisted in the remaining days of 2025, the NGCP official said, “Yes.”
A red alert status, meanwhile, is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the grid’s contingency requirement.
A yellow alert indicates that the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement, putting the grid at risk with the available contingency reserve less than the required operating margin.
For 2026, Alabanza said that it its still too early to speculate since “malayo pa at ang nagiging basehan lang natin ng datos ay ‘yung educated guess (it is too far and our basis will only be educated guess).”
Nevertheless, the NGCP official advised consumers to be responsible in using electricity. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
