NCDA calls out 'mockery' of PWDs amid holiday celebrations

NCDA calls out 'mockery' of PWDs amid holiday celebrations

The National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) on Tuesday urged the public to refrain from mocking persons with disabilities (PWDs) amid the holiday celebrations.

NCDA made the statement after it received reports of imitation and mockery of PWDs during holiday events, with some incidents recorded and uploaded on social media for entertainment and online engagement.

"Such acts perpetuate stigma and discrimination and cause harm not only to persons with disabilities but also to their families and the broader disability community," NCDA said.

The council said these practices violate the Magna Carta for Persons with Disabilities, which upholds the dignity, respect, and equal rights of persons with disabilities.

NCDA also urged the public to report any forms of mockery, imitation, or degrading portrayal of disability uploaded online to the concerned social media platforms.

"The Council will actively coordinate with these platforms to have such content taken down, in accordance with community standards, anti-discrimination policies, and existing laws protecting the rights of persons with disabilities," NCDA said.

It also urged the public to engage in inclusive, respectful, and dignified celebrations.

"Let us ensure that our joy does not come at the expense of others. True celebration reflects our shared commitment to respect equality, and the full inclusion of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society," the council said.

Health Secretary Ted Herbosa earlier reminded the public to be "kind and sensitive" with their comments to others as the Department of Health has monitored increasing mental health cases and anxiety cases during the holidays.  — VDV, GMA Integrated News
