AAP urges mandatory dashcams to deter road rage incidents

The government should require motorists to install  dash-mounted cameras in their vehicles so that authorities can review their footage in road rage incidents, the Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP) said Sunday.

“Sa ibang bansa, mandatory sa kanila na may dashcam. Kapag may sigalot sa kalsada, ire-review lang ang dashcam. Kitang kita mo yung may kasalanan,” AAP president Augustus Ferreria told Super Radyo dzBB.

(Other countries mandate motorists to have dashcams so that when there are incidents, authorities can review them. You can see who’s at fault.)

“'Yan ay isa sa mga paraan, na kahit hindi gumastos ang gobyerno, i-require lang nila sa mga nagmamaneho na mayroon silang dashcam,” he added.

(It’s one of the ways that, even without government spending, drivers would simply be required to have a dashcam.)

Earlier this month, several road rage incidents went viral online, among which was caught in Obando, Bulacan, where the driver exhibited "violent behavior" after he threw a bicycle along a public road.

Another recent incident was caught in Marikina City Riverbanks, where the passengers of two vehicles fought in the middle of the road.

The Land Transportation Office has launched investigations of the two incidents.

Ferreira said a dashcam will help deter drivers from violating traffic rules.

He also suggested including a person’s “psychological framework” in the curriculum of driving schools.

“Dapat ang attitude mo namimigay [sa kalsada],” Ferreira said.
