Why some Filipinos buy lucky charms ahead of New Year

Three days before the New Year, some Filipinos went to Binondo to buy lucky charms as well as round fruits, whose prices had increased.

According to Ivan Mayrina’s Monday report on 24 Oras, many consult with Feng Shui experts days before the New Year, as 2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse, a symbol of passion and determination.

Feng Shui consultant Johnson Chua said that in 2026, it is important to be hardworking, persevering, and mindful of one’s goals.

Those who use lucky charms hope for good careers, successful businesses, and good health.

Juvy Cunanan from Pampanga has been buying lucky charms in Binondo for the past four years.

She said the lucky charms not only brought good fortune to their livelihood but also improved her health.

The belief in having lucky charms during the New Year is usually passed down through generations. This includes the tradition of placing 12 round fruits on the table.

Meanwhile, others believe that eating fruits on New Year brings good luck, particularly in terms of health.

Due to high demand, fruit prices went up, although sales were slow.

Here are the prices of some round fruits:

  • Pakwan: P250/piece
  • Longgan: P250/kilo
  • Grapes: P300/kilo
  • Kiat-kiat: P100/bundle
  • Persimon: P100/3 pieces
