DFA welcomes ceasefire agreement between Cambodia, Thailand

The Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Monday welcomed and expressed its full support for Cambodia and Thailand’s ceasefire agreement that was finalized in a recent special border meeting.

“The Philippines fully supports the latest move by Cambodia and Thailand to return to a ceasefire and acknowledges the desire of both parties to return to dialogue and seek a peaceful and durable means to resolve the issue,” the DFA said in a statement.

The ceasefire was reached during the 3rd Special General Border Committee that was held at the border between Cambodia’s Pailin Province and Thailand’s Chanthaburi Province.

The ceasefire took effect at noon of Saturday, December 27, according to a Reuters report. It was signed by Thai Defense Minister Natthaphon Narkphanit and Cambodian Defense Minister Tea Seiha.

The ceasefire agreement ended 20 days of fighting that involved airstrikes and heavy artillery. The border conflict killed at least 101 people and displaced more than half a million on both sides. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
